Transforming villages into models of sustainable living across Uttar Pradesh
In partnership with Jan Sahyog Platform Trust (legal name Model Gaon), IWCI has been implementing the "Green Gaon Initiative" across 10 Gram Panchayats in 10 districts of Uttar Pradesh.
The idea is simple but powerful — to transform villages into models of sustainable living where people, nature, and progress coexist in balance. Through a combination of efforts focused on water security, clean energy, waste management, women's health, adolescent well-being, and climate-friendly practices, the initiative empowers communities to take charge of their own development in a more responsible and resilient way.
One of the major areas of work has been awareness around hygiene and sanitation. Alongside this, the initiative emphasizes adolescent health and hygiene education, ensuring that young girls understand the importance of clean water, balanced nutrition, and safe hygiene practices, especially during menstruation.
Health awareness sessions in schools and community spaces have encouraged adolescents to adopt healthier habits and take greater responsibility for their well-being.
Discussions on mental health and reproductive issues such as PCOD and PCOS have also been introduced, helping break the silence around topics often left unspoken in rural settings.
In collaboration with ASHA and Anganwadi workers, the initiative promotes the concept of a "Poshan Thali" — a balanced and nutritious meal essential for the growth and health of adolescent girls.
Through these combined efforts, the project has reached and directly engaged around 1,200 adolescents and women, encouraging greater health awareness and behavioral change at the community level.
A special focus of Green Gaon is on women's leadership and health. Regular discussions and awareness drives on menstrual hygiene and reproductive health are helping break long-held taboos and encouraging open dialogue.
Adolescent girls and women are learning about safe, hygienic, and environment-friendly menstrual practices. These sessions are fostering confidence and collective understanding, creating spaces where women feel supported and empowered to lead.
