Livelihood security is central to dignity, resilience, and long-term community well-being. At the Institute for Water & Climate Initiatives (IWCI), we work to strengthen sustainable livelihood opportunities for underserved communities by enhancing skills, improving employability, and supporting income-generation pathways—especially for women, youth, and informal workers.
In India, a significant share of the workforce remains in informal employment—jobs without formal contracts, social security, or income stability. According to NITI Aayog, nearly 87% of India's workers are engaged in informal employment, many in casual or self-employment arrangements that offer limited protection and low earnings. This economic vulnerability is further intensified by climate stress, health risks, and limited access to skills and markets.
IWCI addresses these challenges through skill development, financial literacy, entrepreneurship support, and market linkages, enabling individuals to build confidence, diversify income sources, and move towards economic independence. Our approach connects livelihoods with sustainability—promoting green skills, climate-resilient work, and locally rooted economic solutions.
